refreshingly un-formulaic,
Having thought about this movie some, it is not so much un-formulaic as that Richard Curtis is quite deliberately playing with the formulas. The most prominent example is that the typical male role in a Romantic Comedy is taken by Carrie and the typical female role by Charles. This confuses a number of people who expect a normal Romantic Comedy heroine and dislike Carrie because she is not what they want.I think that FWF is full of Romantic Comedy clichés, but they are used with a twist, in an unconventional way, and so they are not obvious. It is an immensely clever movie.I would suggest
The Lady Eve. It is a different movie, and it has a level of strong emotion that is unusual in a comedy, but it is a great movie and has, for me, one of the best endings ever.P. S. On reflection,
The Importance of Being Earnest (1952) may be more what you are looking for. Note the date. Not the later one.
