No. A platonic friend. In the DVD's deleted scenes, he's telling Carrie in a taxi how he met everyone; Gareth was their professor, Fiona I forget how Charles met her and Tom, and Scarlett showed up at a party he had and never left.

Scarlett showed up at a party he had and never left. She was a foundling. Charles found her under a table the morning after a party.
As much as I have always loved Hughie, there isn't much to his character.I understand what you mean, and I have upon occasion thought similar things, but he does take in Scarlett and take her as his date to all of the weddings without the slightest hint of embarrassment.I don't believe many people could do that in class conscious England. share
Why not? In upper class you can. It shoves off some snobbery dirt.
shareBummer that they cut that from the final version of the film, because that was something I was curious about! Most of the characters seemed to be likely friends anyhow, but Scarlett and Gareth both appeared to be outliers on the norm, so that's very interesting to know. I watched it on demand so no DVD features for me :(
