I watched this when I was a kid. Was a bit shocked by all the gore especially at the last part when the guts fell out hehe. Funny thing I forgot the name of it for a long time.
Anyway it was a little dark but the animation was great. Its a german film but was the animation done by japanese?
I can see German, American, Irish and possibly French companies in the animation credits, I don't know of a Japanese company working on the film. Is there any particular reason you thought there was a Japanese animation company involved?

Whenever there isn't an animated movie that doesn't serve solely to children, or one with this chilling of a story, some like to automatically assume it was a Japanese company, because somehow they're associated with all mature animation. Which is hilarious, because Japan has as many children-focused cartoons as the west. Western animation companies made this and others (The Plague Dogs and Watership Down, for example).
Of course, a wide variety of animators with different ethnic and national backgrounds work on the same film in just about every movie, especially large-scale ones.
Japan actually has some very good kids cartoons as well, such as Cardcaptor Sakura.
Anyway I was wondering why they asked.
