What's so great about it?

I just watched this movie with high expectations from reading some of the comments. I was referred from the message board of "The Secret of NIMH", this allegedly being one of the great adult animated movies of the 80's.

What I found in this movie was:
-A pretty boring plot. I couldn't really care less who did or did not kill 400 cats in that slum neighborhood. As a cat, if I lived in that neighborhood, I would take my own life fairly quickly anyway.

-Unpleasant scenes.. you know, things you just don't expect to see in a cartoon. A cat banging its head hard on a celing.. a super creepy cat chase where the 'main kitty' is being chased by the brotherhood of electricity execution or whatever their name is. Scientists dripping some sort of acid on cats' shaved heads.

-Just generally a dark and creepy atmosphere. No joy or funny moments. Though it is funny how strange the movie is.

I don't mind watching a gory, dark, creepy movie as long as it delivers some real horror and/or a cool plot. This doesn't seem to deliver either, though it does manage to deliver gore by the truckload.

I've enjoyed reading the threads for this film and seeing everyone's reaction. I see why someone wouldn't like it, but I personally enjoyed it and got something out of it.

For me the gruesomeness was justified because overall this is a film about a group of cats trying to create a "pure race", an obvious commentary on Nazi Germany. The stuff that happened in real life Nazi Germany was just as gruesome as the things depicted in the film, if not more, so to me the dark subject matter justifies the dark atmosphere. We should feel uncomfortable when we think about these things.

I thought the film told a very interesting story and found it well-animated and complex. My one problem with the film is that the parallels to Nazi Germany were brought up quite late in the film and felt slightly tacked-on. Though I still think it worked overall, I would have liked to have seen some of these themes brought up earlier.

I do understand how this wouldn't appeal to everyone, though. I'm not usually a fan of noir films (I normally find them boring), but I was pleasantly surprised by this one.

I just watched it and was intrigued after hearing so many great things about it.

I didn't hate it, but I didn't think it was anything great either. I did appreciate how original it was for an adult animated movie as it's very rare to see any like this and while it had a great start, I felt like the pacing wasn't that great and the story became a bit of a mess towards the end. Also, while it was gory it wasn't quite as gruesome as I was expecting.

It kept me entertained for a one time watch, but it's not something I feel to need to ever watch again.

Sounds like Archer with cats, directed by Tarantino.
