That might be one of those "mistakes that aren't really mistakes." In both the book and the movie, England, while nominally independent after WWII, has become a puppet state of the Nazi regime -- could be that Mercedes simply took over RR and took over its factories, designs, etc.

Don't think so. Actually the Reich respected industries in occupied west Europe, benefiting his owners with war-production contracts. And Hitler regarded Britain more as an potential allied that was misled by staunch anti-germans like Churchill and his accomplishes, than a future puppet. So they would've respected certain forms, the germans didn't want or need everybody in western europe hating them.
