Nazi Space?

In the book (and I believe the Film too?) March and Charlie are comparing the German and U.S. Space programs respectively. Charlie admits the Nazis are probably ahead of the Americans. Thinking on this, I would have thought the Americans would have been lucky to have achieved very little if any space flight at that time (1964) at all! Remember, in real life, the U.S. expertise came mainly from the 'liberated' German Rocket Scientists namely, Werner Von Braun and his team - and even then it wasn't plain sailing, especially in the earlier days! In the Fatherland alternative history, guess we can disregard the Russians since, defeat of Stalin would have come before Korolev (Chief Designer) and his Rocket team, were ever released from the Gulags.
So, surely who controlled Space...
