March's watch

The watch had the initials J.C. on it and was given to March by the German navy, now could it be that it's previous owner was a holocaust victim (say, Joseph Cohen) and the whole thing is meant to be kind of symbolic; March owns something that was stolen from a nation murdered by the Nazis?

reply

Yes, that's the exact point of the watch.

Wow, I thought you were being sarcastic angelsinexile!
How is something like that EVER suggested in the movie? Perhaps "jewish possesions given as gifts to the soldiers"? Still, I think that conclusion on the watch is pure BS. I read it as typical US cute-kid-mambo-jambo nonsense filler, "son, this will be something you can remember me by". And the differences between the kid book vs movie...don't get me started!
Then again, the makers of the film might have inserted such a meaning into this tripe. Bah. 3/10

Shoot straight, you bastards - don't make a mess of it!

Ever think that there is some symbolism to it being J.C. (Jesus Christ) another Jew who died for his beliefs???

reply

In the book, the watch is replaced by socks for the U-Boat crews (which March was one of). Socks woven from the hair of Jewish women.
