Crooklyn is not a real city and the Carmichaels do not live in Crooklyn, NedBigby3. Crooklyn is the nickname adopted by the characters in the movie as a direct result of experiences had while living in Brooklyn. Brooklyn, my hometown, has been known for being a little backwards and its residents are known for the predilection towards theivery, thus the two meanings of "Crook."

reply

I have to agree with you GOLDKORY. That is the reason precisely. The Carmichaels don't live in a made up city. As a matter of fact, when the electric company comes to turn off their lights, the man states their address as Arlington Place. That would designate them somewhere between Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights.

No Ned I don't agree with you on that. I think that Troy was simply being sarcastic. For example people from New York might say they are from the Big Apple, ATL for Atlanta or Chi-town for Chicago; or people from Florida say they are from the Sunshine State. It's just a nickname. We may never know whether Spike Lee was using it this way or whether he intended for it to be called Crooklyn, New York, but all the clues point to the city as being Brooklyn, NY. Also, all of Spike's other movies that are set in New York, are credited as being in Brooklyn, such as Coney Island (Brooklyn) in He Got Game, and Bed-Stuy (Brooklyn) in Do The Right Thing. So there it is.

its just a nickname for brooklyn

just like how the bronx is the boogie down

reply

You are all wrong. If you remember in the letter troy gets from her mom while she is still is with her aunt saul her mom calls it "Crazy Brooklyn"
Crazy+ Brooklyn=Crooklyn

reply

Its a mixture of Brooklyn and Crazy.

reply

Crooklyn was just a nickname for Brooklyn. In the scene before the man comes to turn off their lights the mother asked the father could they take a drive out of Brooklyn. I also used to think it was a fictional city until I watched the full movie.

reply

Wrong. I'm a native New Yorker and the reason it's called Crookyln is because of the crooked (criminal) ways of Brooklyn. Crooklyn is NOT a city in NY.

reply

Crooklyn = Brooklyn

reply

It's amazing how people can debate a non-issue. Crooklyn was and is a Black-American slang term in New York for Brooklyn. Manhattan is " Money Makin' Manhattan" or "Manny Hanny", Staten Island is "Shaolin", the Bronx is "The Boogie Down (Bronx)" or "The B.X.", Long Island is called "Strong Island", et al.

reply

jmasalle,

Absolutley Right! I was born in Brooklyn 1971, and I remember that in the late 70`s people were already calling Brooklyn, Crooklyn or BK.
Crooklyn is just a nickname or slang that most New Yorkers call it.
It`s not a fictional BOROUGH inteneded for the film... Don`t you remember when the uncle from the south was driving the little girl back to the airport and he saids something along the lines of..." well troy, looks like it`s back to bad ol' Brooklyn".

I think this is really funny -

Obviously Spike got you all to think a bit, eh?

1) The movie takes place in Brooklyn, NY. Brooklyn is a place for many Spike lee films.

2) Brooklyn is a real place. Let's be clear. Very alive and real. For those who are a bit dense, it was also referenced BY NAME more than once in the film.

3) Crooklyn is a nick-name for the 'mussed' up life people have in Brooklyn. IT IS FIGURATIVE language.

Amazing movie. Really wonderful.

reply

Not only is the movie obviously set in Brooklyn, it was shot on an actual block near Bedford Avenue. Use Google Street View to take a look at Arlington Place.
