Why does he torture himself?

I love the movie, but I can't help but ask a couple questions when I watch it. For one, why, if he is that obsessed with being a cop, didn't he try to become one? This is his big lifelong dream and he didn't become one.

Also what doesn't make sense, is why in the world does he keep going to that stupid diner? Obviously the place has lousy service, what kind of a bonehead keeps going someplace that so blatently messes up your order and mocks you if you complain? Furthermore the first time he took his lunch so why did he go in the first place?

These questions just run through my mind when I watch the movie.

HAHAHA! You could ask similar questions of THOUSANDS of other movie characters, pal! Why do they always do dopey things to get themselves in trouble? Why does she open the door behind which stands the villain? How is it that you see the hero fight ten (usually more, hehehe) bruisers at once and come out of it with only a little sliver of blood on his face? That's what I call the Movie Universe: a completely fantastic place in which totally improbable things happen for our amusement.
