Elvis Presley

Why was there the whole Elvis Presley thing occurring throughout the movie? Was it some in-joke or tribute? I mean, for a start they go to the Elvis Presley Memorial Wing, then the guy offers Mark an Elvis Pezley (made especially for the film), then "Elvis Presley" is written in big letters as graffitti in Mark's jail cell, and there's an fake Elvis in the hospital complaining about his guitar. What's with all the references?

reply

I don't know, but I was thinking the same thing.

reply

Wasn't the setting Memphis? I could be wrong, but they did film part of it there.

reply

Yes. Most Grisham is in Memphis. Is there some Memphis connection with Elvis or something?

No, it was a genuine question so thank you for your response. I am very Elvis ignorant due to my age and nationality.

He is very very famous, and I'm guessing most people knew about Memphis, but I'm rather ignorant and didn't stuff like specific towns or anything. :-)

Amusing signature by the way. :-)

i havent seen the movie, but in the book, the private detective's secretary's husband was an obsessive elvis fan/elvis impersonator, he wasnt in the book but his wife talked about him, he even got his name changed to elvis aaron. does he show up in the movie, or is he mentioned at all? that might have something to do with it, plus elvis is from memphis? or buried there? sorry, i'm not a fan, and not really up on the trivia(other than elvis sightings in the weekly world news).

In the book, in the scene where Mark and Reggie are escaping from Memphis to New Orleans, there is a small conversation on Elvis.
Mark switches on the radio and they're playing an Elvis song. He asks Reggie if she was an Elvis fan and she replies saying that she and her friends ( during their college days ) would watch Elvis from his backyard when he was not THAT famous and lived with his parents. And then there is a little talk on Elvis becoming very famous, and Mark comparing himself to Elvis because of the fame he is currently getting.
