and they all lived happily ever after...

Did they bollocks.

The book makes clear that Mark Sway was left traumatized by what happened to him and would need counseling, him and his family would spend the rest of their lives looking over their shoulders, and he would never see or talk with Reggie Love again and Reggie herself would need round-the-clock FBI protection.

This was nearly all ditched though for a happy ending where they contentedly fly off into the sunset whilst Reggie and Foltrigg kiss and make up (glossing over the fact that his actions had put Mark in serious danger).

Well, people like happy endings, what can I say? They get themselves emotionally invested in the characters, hope for the best and they are rewarded that comfort at the end. Not every film can have a Boy In the Striped Pyjamas-like ending.

As a kid, I knew Mark Sway had zero chance of reuniting with Reggie. Even if he so tried to contact Reggie, he and his family would be forced to move. What if the bad guys placed a tap on Reggie's phone? That would also compromise Reggie and possibly Foltrigg.

I have not read the book but agree with you regarding the way 'Hollywood' can no longer end a movie without the main characters telling lame jokes or high five'n each other. Even the fact that that the younger brother was going to continue to need hospitalization was glossed over.
