Overambitious prosecuting attorneys are not known for fairness, or even respect for facts. They will get the most convictions they can as cheaply as they can.
I don't know why anyone should accuse Mark of being "stupid" for not putting himself in their hands immediately and assuming that he would get the protection he needed. He and Reggie almost had to sweat blood to extract that deal. As soon as it was made they talked, but not before.
