Why did Madeleine Stowe's character and Benicio Del Toro's character make any pact - what did each of them have to gain from it? And they did after she killed her husband right, or was it before? I wasn't that confused by this movie until the end!!!

It was before. She hired him to follow her husband, then they made the pact after he presented her with the photos proving his adultery. The mistress was in on it.
