was this at all inspired by the old tv show 'Highway Patrol'

there was an episode of the show "Highway Patrol" (1955) called 'Blast Area Copter' (1956) and you can watch it on imdb hulu http://www.imdb.com/video/hulu/vi3384476953/ story line is "Jim Barnaby, a fugitive gunman, has taken Marge Willis captive for the use of her car." check it out. Dr. Drew Pinsky's mom plays the character 'Marge.'

Well, what happened? Did "Marge" decide to join forces with "Jim," like in this movie?

I don't know about Highway Patrol but there are some similarities to the 1977 movie Grand Theft Auto http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076100/

I hope this doesn't sound stupid, but does the GRAND THEFT AUTO video game have anything at all to do with GRAND THEFT AUTO the movie?

It was inspired by the David Lynch film ‘Lost Highway’ which also starred Henry Rollins, and came out three years later. I know, right?
