The blown up chopper ... (spoilers)

Hi, I absolutely love this movie and have watched it numerous times. However this last time I noticed something that kind of spoils the mood at the ending. When Kristy is saving Charlie by taking the news guy hostage she shoots at her father's helicopter thus blowing it up in the process ... so, she probably killed the pilot?!? Or was the chopper empty at that time? Up to that point I don't believe that anybody actually got hurt during the entire chase ... there were a lot of car accidents but it's reasonable to believe that everybody survived ok, but the chopper pretty much blew up and anyone in it would be a goner. This kind of ruins the end sequence on the beach for me, I mean anything else can be forgiven, but not that.

You can see the helicopter pilot outside the craft when it blows... no collateral damage there (she must have had a HALO 1 pistol tought..)

True, although at least there was surprise on her face. It wasn't like she thought 'if I shoot at the chopper it will blow up'.

I think you can 'suspend disbelief (especially in this kind of movie) and assume it got the 1:1,000,000 shot that hit exactly where it had to hit.
