Very much so. Lets not forget, either, that there was a planned Monkey Island film back in the early 90's, when Adventure games/ Point and Clickers were very popular.
The plan was to hire either Michael J Fox or Martin Short as Guybrush. I personally think a young Michael J Fox woulda been perfect, but around this time he found out he had Parkinson's, so he more than likely would not have been cast. I don't remember who was planned to play LeChuck, but I am sure Tim Curry would have been considered.

Sadly, nothing ever came of it, and it is a pity. Its one of the few times, I feel, that they could have gotten it right. George Lucas was still sane back in the early 90's, and not taken over by CGI, and I am sure he would have had alot to say about staying true to the characters. Again, this was when he was sane and not creatively bankrupt.

However, many fans feel that Pirates of the Carribean is a total rip off of Monkey Island, especially the first film. Undead pirates, an Undead captain (Geoffrey Rush is so like LeChuck its scary), a tough talking Governer's daughter (with an English accent like Elaine Marley Threepwood), and Orlando Bloom/ Johnny Depp as Guybrush (Two separate characters, yet really one person). When they had to come up with their own ideas, they came up quite short.

Cabin boy rips off alot of elements of Monkey Island, but Pirates of the Carribean does too. And one made alot of money, and one did not.
