VERY under-rated

I can see (not understand but see) how people don't like this movie if theyre lookin for a masterpiece of American cinema but take it with a grain of salt n maybe a shot of tequila. But its not tryin to be the Godfather or Citizen Kane but Cabin Boy. And in my opinion it is a masterpiece in its own right. Chris Elliot is a comedy genius and not mentioned often enough when it comes to talk of whos who in comedy. It is one of the dumbest, most corny, dry humored movie of all time (right up there with Mom & Dad Save The World, also a classic) which makes it so great because those kind of movies can only be made by a genius or by axcident. This movie was no axcident either. The props, the dialouge, the scenery all of it is purley genious. A must see classic of anyone that appreciates real comedy.

Yes I agree, I LOVE this movie. It is a bright shining example of how something can be so bad that it's good.

reply

Haha, "Mom and Dad Save the World" was a great movie. It also had Bobby Budnick (from the show Salute Your Shorts) in it for a little bit (he was one of their kids). Good stuff.

reply

Yup!
Right up there with UHF, Mom & Dad save the world, Stay tuned and Pee-wee's big adventure, Howard the Duck...

All of 'em fun, more intelligent than they first seem little movies.

cabin boy, in my opinion, was very....horrible

The problem with movie-goers today, is that if they have to read into something at all... they don't like it! Is it too much work to do so? With Cabin Boy, 90% of people HATE it. And why? Because they can't see past the crappy props and all that. But this is done on purpose. Everything they say is BAD about this movie makes it all the better. When he's in the water, and the background is very obviously hand painted... so funny. This movie is amazingly funny.

reply

well, maybe so, but the main character wasn't funny. Maybe if he was played by adam sandler it would have been more suitable, however I say cabinboy and that was top 3 horrible . so ...i got nothing

Good times call for something

reply

Adam Sandler? That explains a lot...

reply

Adam Sandler sucks. His films are formulaic crap, with the same joke / story repeated over and over. His only genius is getting hot women (most of the time) to be his co-star / love interest. By contrast Chris "Christ" Elliott is very humorous and original.

reply

Very true, but that doesn't stop this "comedy" from being particularly boring and unfunny. Its not formulaic but its also not good.

This movie is, by far, one of the most hilarious movies ever made. I love all the classic type films... but, man, I can so get into funny movies, that are REALLY funny.

Kudos to the person that also mentioned Pee-Wee's Big Adventure! That is a funny movie as well.

I'm also one of the few that LOVED The Cable Guy... that movie was brilliant. "The blue knight rules! The red knight sucks the big one! You're goin' down, red knight! You're goin' down, down, down!"

but, yeah... Cabin Boy is glorious... and its stupidity is what makes it so wonderful... I mean, seriously... the girl was swimming around the world... a half-man, half-shark... a floating cupcake - one that spits tobacco!

Thank you to all the people that brought us this masterpiece. I'll close with one of my favorite quotes from Cabin Boy that I always slip into my comments on bad drivers...

"I simply suggested that you have the driving ability of a braindead laboratory ape." - Chris Elliot, Cabin Boy

My friends, family and I all love this movie. Still riding the wave of success from one of the Greatest Telivision Siries ever (Get a Life), Chris Elliot went on to create this landmark in filmaking history (is this all in my head, perhaps, but If this was true, and everyone agreed with me I would live in a Utopian society)
I really can't understand why people don't see the humor in this movie (as well as almost everything else Chris Elliot gets involved with). Oh well, it's a sad world we live in, but Cabin Boy gives me a ray of sunshine every time I think of the ships deck tasting like marzipan.

Just when I thought i'd heard everything about Cabin Boy, along comes another nauseatun' tale. I had no idea that Ricki Lake played the Filthy Whore. David Letterman was hilarious in his cameo. He should do that more often. These pipes are clean.

Easily one of my favorite comedies of all time. If you liked it, its one of those movies that got better the more times you saw it and you found yourself quoting it years later. If you hated it (and I'm sure a lot of people did) you just curse the name of everyone involved for making such a horrible film.

Mom and Dad Save the Universe, Stay Tuned, Cabin Boy, I've got 'em all on DVD. It's the bizarre humor that I love, the campiness, the plots (lol), its a shame when people put it down, they don't even try to see why someone might like it.

My favorite films are The Godfather films, and I like this movie. Chris Elliott should get more work.
