Years ago it was rated NC17 !

I saw it on opening nite and it was rated R back then. I haven't seen it in 10 years but what i remember it would probably get a PG13 since films like Grudge and others got the 13 rating.

From what I remember, the "F" word was used more than 4 times. There were a couple of scenes with gore that would make it R rated but they are pretty corny compared to today's standards. Also there was a scene with brief nudity that was more of a PG-13 thing. Also the typical teen drinking and partying. I think the movie should've been rated PG-13.

the F word was used and there are gore scenes. one part of movie edwards character cuts off a guys leg as one of the murders

How can you say it should be PG-13? Michael stabs a man in the back several times rather graphically and without reason. He then watches him struggle around the room with a knife in his back. Following this, he proceeds to cut off the mans foot, while the guy is still alive.
