The Friend is Grungecore
Furlong's friend in this movie is such a cheesy Pearl Jam fanatic with the flannel tied around his waist. The hair is pretty gay too.

He was dressed for his time period. They could have made him Gothic. That would have been more fitting for the movie. That look has been around almost three decades now. He does have a grunge attitude by going back to flick Edward Furlong off. Music was probably the main inspiration for the movie.
