Beverly Hills Cop 3 was good, very underrated

I know a lot of people that actually like this movie, i even have a film teacher say that he likes this too and resents the second film. But for some reason this movie has a low rating on imdb and Ive seen some people write on websites why they dont like it. I thought that the third film was fun entertainment, it was good, not bad like what some other people say. Its better than part 2, but not as good as the first BHC movie. I liked all three movies(as well as Eddie Murphy's other movies), and am excited for the forth coming movie in 2010.

Heres how I would rate the BHC movies:

Beverly Hills Cop- 10/10
Beverly Hills Cop 3- 10/10(yes i know that people will hate on me for that but I dont care I liked this movie)
Beverly Hills Cop 2- 8/10

reply

i totally a agree with you there Beverly Hills Cop 3- 10/10
Beverly Hills Cop- 9/10
Beverly Hills Cop 2-8/10

Yeh i decided to watch this film on DVD yesterday, and I admit its not very realistic, and most of its plain silly, but thats what makes it such a great film! ive always loved this film. It may not be as funny as the first one, but its more entertaining in my opinion and i didn't like the second one as much as i like this. Who wants to watch realistic gun battles, when you can watch a load of idiots running around shooting at each other in a childrens theme park lol The idea to this film was so unique.

reply

I totally agree.

i always thought the 2nd film, while great was the worst one. It's story isn't much different from the first. the third film is just a lot of fun.

reply

The second one was a bit too dull and plot-driven, but the third is just totally out-of-tone for the series. Much too cartoony and throwaway.

It's not terrible on its own terms no... I don't mind it as a film in its own right... But it's a terrible BHC sequel. Especially as it disregarded important BHC elements- like an opening sequence (with music) and inspector Taggart etc. Billy and Serge became charicatures aswell.

Again, the film isn't hopeless if removed from the pre-established BHC world. There's nothing wrong with OTT comedy in films, or montages with people singing to Diana Ross in films... Those things can work in the right context. But you have to remember that BHC 3 is supposed to work in the context of the BHC franchise! And it doesn't... It's a little bit embarrassing.

Again, that doesn't mean that the film is worthless or amateurish, but you have to understand that sequels to much loved films will be watched with specific expectations...

In fairness, I think that the car chase at the start is enjoyable, along with the 'Ellis Dewald' speech part and even the Spider rescue part. The overall film just feels unsuitable as a BHC offering though. It's just not 'right'...

I need to see part III again ASAP but right now it would be:

BHC 8/10
BHC II 6/10
BHC III 4/10

Can I borrow your towel for a sec? My car just hit a water buffalo.

Giving these movies a 10 is a joke.

How old are you? Seven?

Honestly, I don't mean to insult you, but if you rate Beverly Hills Cop 3 a 10 then I don't really know how you would rate Die Hard 1, 2 and 4 as well as Mad Max and the first three Leathal Weapon movies as well as Pulp Fiction.

I mean seriously. You'd have to give Pulp Fiction a 10 also and what does that leave you with? BHC 3 and Pulp Fiction both a 10?

That's ridiculous.

If you just compare the three movies against themselves then it's ok I guess. Because you could then say BHC 3 is a 1 and Pulp Fiction is a 10, with BHC 2 being a 0.8 in comparison.

But otherwise... wow... just wow.

I could only accept this scale if those three movies were the only ones you've seen in your life.

I mean have you ever heard of Star Wars? The Incredibles? The Untouchables? Shawshank Redemption? The Godfather?

This is like measuring greatness with a scale so tiny you can't read the markings.

I don't know what's wrong with all of you...but part 3 was a horrible movie/sequel...part 1 & 2 were nearly perfection and part 3 didn't come anywhere close...there were way too many new characters and the script/plot and villain were a joke!

PEACE & BLESSINGS

reply

I don't think Pulp Fiction is a 10. It's at least twice the movie BHC3 is, but it's no 10.

But I do agree with you, in a way. Beverly Hills Cop was a good film (a very good one, IMO), but each sequel was worse than the film before it. At this rate, the eventual 4th film will be getting a 2 from me.

I saw all 3 movies during their first run in the theater. Part 1 and 2 were really funny and entertaining. The Jokes didn't seem forced.

I remember I was very excited about seeing part 3 and after seeing it I was trying to find things that I liked about it, but couldn't. Till this day, I've only seen part 3 twice. Once in the theater, and then again on home video. What lacked in part 3 was Eddie Murphy's whit and wise cracks. Jokes all seemed forced.

I've got a feeling part 4 is going to be the same.

I wanna see the 80's Eddie Murphy.

Well, I would rate this much higher than Die Hard 4 for sure. No ugly CGI or absurd techno-babble plot. Die Hard 4 largely seems like a product for the MTV generation. I'm also surprised that you seem to rate Die Hard 4 higher than 3, which IMO is the infinitely better film.

I don't think BHC3 is great, but I do think it's better than the 4.9 rating on here. It's nowhere near as good as the first one, but I enjoyed it more than 2.

You people all apparently are fools, thinking an absolute GARBAGE movie is anything remotely close to decent. This movie is a TURKEY, and there is no way around that.

I see you comparing it to movies like Die Hard and others, which are indeed fun movies to watch, but also in the end are moronic, written by idiots who have to reach to the preposterous in order to entertain--and good moviemakers shouldn't have to do that.

For an example, I would give you the idiotic notion in Die Hard that just because John McClane is a cop, he gets to (in the '80s) board a plane to California with his handgun in a shoulder holster, on his person, while traveling on a personal vacation. BZZZT! Sorry, only in 2006 or so did cops even get anything close to the right to carry nationwide. In whatever longago year it was that Die Hard came out, cops couldn't carry outside of whatever state gave them their police authority. And forget about boarding a plane with the gun worn. Even today, even federal agents have to have paperwork and jump through hoops to be able to do that.

Now, on to Beverly Hills Cop. In the first movie, as well as the rest, Axel would have been BREAKING THE LAW, committing a felony in California, as well as federal laws, to take his handgun with him to do his unofficial police investigation in California. To do so and never be discovered, fine. But to do so and end up having to use the gun would be to end up charged with felony criminal possession of a firearm, as well as laws about crossing state lines with a prohibited firearm.

Now, about BHC3 -- WHEN SERGE IS SELLING THAT RIDICULOUS MULTI-TOOL RIFLE, WHY DIDN'T YOU ALL REALIZE HOW COMPLETELY MORONIC THAT WAS?! There is no such thing! And there never would be! And the idea that it was marketed to civilians as the "must-have" gun...! This movie really should be scoured from existence as a piece of putrid crap!!

reply

There's a real irony in someone who is obsessively pro-gun calling anything or anyone "moronic". Also, people should be entitled to like whatever they like without getting labeled as "fools". If you're so intellectually superior to people who like this movie, why do you need to shout down at them in a condescending tirade of name calling with an overuse of CAPS? You would be far more likely to be taken seriously if you stated your opinion in a civil manner.

reply

It wasn't that bad like everyone made it to be. I never saw it in the theater but when I finally watched it, I kinda liked it. I'll admit that it's not up there w/ the previous 2. Try watching all 3 of them back to back to back & you can tell a real sudden change. Part 3 was pretty good considering it's always hard to top the original.

reply

"clearbluepeace", what a stupid and close-minded post.

reply

What's wrong with pro-gun?

Would you like the American people to be unarmed?
I think that Axel would agree with people who are pro-arms, pro-gun, pro-protection.

To see the difference in quality and artistry, let's contrast the middle/development scenes of each film.

In BHC 1, Axel visits a strip club with two cops on duty, who are portrayed sympathetically despite Taggart having seriously punched Foley in the stomach when meeting him. To this point, the Detroit vs. Beverly Hills angle has been played up liberally, with "by the book" contrasted with Axl's freelancing style. The strip club scene begins with the obviously eccentric Billy getting into the swing of things, Axl almost seeming to *pretend* to have a good time, or to be batsh** crazy, as a sort of inside joke with himself -- and Taggart simply looking uncomfortable.

Suddenly Axl starts communicating with Taggart in a voice designed not to be noticed by Billy, as if Foley/Taggart are Billy's parents. Axl thinks somebody is making the joint. TREMENDOUS acting chops from both here. Axl is still dancing & smiling for the girls (and Billy) but his eyes are deathly. "No *beep* this time." Soon Axl masquerades and a drunk man who knows one of the villains, and the director combines the suspense & tension with more dark comedy as the gun is pulled and threats made -- "Phil! You've changed, man!" etc. Finally the scene ends with Taggart taking center stage in understated, a**-kicking fashion.

In the expository & developmental scenes of BHC 3, Axl visits a theme park (by himself with no interesting characters along) where he falls in love, discovers a secret underground network of offices, is detained & accosted by the chief bad guy, the cops, the FBI and security heads, gets into a gunfight, meets Walt Disney (who immediately befriends Axl and confides to him even though he's a complete stranger), saves two children in a Die-Hard style daring stunt, and grand-stands in a ham fisted manner while being threatened by two stock-character baddies. This all happens during one half hour of the movie.

3 is a perfectly funny movie for an afternoon. There are some clever bits with Judge Reinhold & with the Okey Dokey costume. But it does not belong in the same conversation with Beverly Hills Cop.

Your analysis of the strip club scene was fascinating, love the "No bullsh!t this time" line. I"d love you to compare and contrast more scenes between part 1 and part 3.
