Personally, I've never been huge on these movies. I liked the first film, but felt Eddie Murphy was kind of annoying. I even liked the 2nd film okay, although it was kind of a rehash.
I admire the 3rd film for trying to do something different, and I think it's the most intense and ambitious of the films. In fact, I think it's gotten better with time.
But throughout the film, I kept being thrown off by the films knack of alternating from drama to comedy. I felt as if there was an internal battle going on and it turns out that I was right. John Landis wanted another comedy while Eddie Murphy wanted to be more serious. Its not uncommon for struggles like this to happen, but it REALLY shows in the final film.
Perhaps the most awkward transition was when you went to the funeral(which was sad, although that singer was cracking me up for some reason) to Axel's bit with the wife(which tried to be both sad and amusing) to the whole French gag where Axel is up to his old self. It was as if he'd just forgotten about the death.
If the movie tried to be funnier, I think it could've been the best of the trilogy, and if it tried to be more dramatic, it could've been the best of the trilogy........but in its battle to be both, it ends up falling down pretty hard.
(although for the record, I dont think it's any worse than the 2nd film, although Taggart is missed).
I agree this movie wasn't that good. From what I've been told there will be a Beverly Hills Cop 4 which will be directed by Brett Ratner who directed the Rush Hour movie franchise. Eddie Murphy himself admitted he was disappointed with the movie at the box office and feels they could make a better movie won't be released until 2014 which is quite sometime from now. They are also saying that Detective John Taggart will be back too.
Director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, X-Men: The Last Stand) spoke to MTV News about some of his plans for the fourth "Beverly Hills Cop" movie, which he revealed will simply be called "Beverly Hills Cop."
"It's a hard R," he said regarding internet rumors that he will be making a watered-down PG-13 reboot of the action/comedy franchise staring Eddie Murphy as a foul-mouthed, wise-cracking Detroit cop Axel Foley.
Ratner also dismissed rumors that the film will focus on Axel joining forces with an overweight, insecure cop to investigate a suspicious suicide. "There was all this stuff on the Internet and they'd read a script," he said. "It's not the script I'm making."
He continued: "It's a reinvention. I'm going to reintroduce it to a contemporary audience. I'm going to take the best of the first two films and put it into the new one."
Ratner, who directed all three "Rush Hour" films, seems certain that he has a winner on his hands. "Eddie Murphy to me was what Chris Tucker is to 12 and 13 year olds today," he said. "I would never do another buddy cop movie, but to do 'Beverly Hills Cop' is a dream for me. Eddie is a genius."
First, Eddie Murphy is one of my favorite actors and comedians in movies the Beverly Hills cop franchise is one of the best in action movie history. Why wait until 2014 why not release BHC 4 in 2012? They are saying that filming starts in 2011? Sources?? Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are going to release Bad Boys 3 in 2012 according to IMDB I can't wait to see both these movies.
Second, many people here are saying that Sgt. John Taggart will be returning in the forth installment? From what I remember that Billy Rosewood told Axel in part 3 was that Sgt. John Taggart is retired and that he was living in Arizona and he spent his whole day playing golf? Isn't that the reason that Hector Elizondo was cast in Beverly Hills Cop 3 to replace John Ashton's role in the film? Don't get me wrong I would like to see the original cast.
Third, Beverly Hills Cop 3 was a very good movie. The only thing I would of changed was the setting compared to the other two of the franchise a theme park setting seemed kind of different in a sense they could of made it better. And the villain of the movie Timothy Carhart (Ellis De Wald) didn't sit well with me. This is similar to the villain in Die Hard pt 4 Timothy Olyphant (Thomas Gabriel). All I'm saying is that they could of cast someone much better than him to be the "Bad Guy" speaking of this anyone here know who is rumored to be the villain in Beverly Hills Cop IV?
Not long after the film, I was speaking with Alan Young. We got onto talking about BHCIII and he mentioned that Eddie Murphy would have preferred that the movie wasn't as violent as it had been. He wanted it to be more story driven than action driven.
