Sadly yes it's true, BHC4 will be the direct sequel to the first film. So in other words, all the events that happened in II and III basically never happened.
Supposivley the film producers want Murphy to return to his dark roots that we saw in the first film, where as they feel both II and III were just too silly.
Consequently they want to disregard BHC2 and BHC3 and make this film the kind of movie that makes up for those last two BHC films doing so poorly.

are you *beep* me??? they should just ignore part 3...part 2 is great sequel. They are doing the same thing with Predators..ignoring Predator 2...I hate it when studios do that. There is no reason for that =/ then why call it BHC 4??? Makes no sense.
I totally 100% agree with you, its bullshyt, but the fact is in the studio's mind, both part II and III were too silly. I agree with you, BHC2 was good, of course it wasn't quite as good as part 1, but it was still a great film noetheless.
I can see where they do not like part 3, but part 2 being disregarded is a bunch of crap in my book. Its basically the same as Superman Returns being the direct sequel of Superman II. Also it is basically like Casino Royale completely disregarding the previous 21 James Bond films before it and making it a direct sequel to Dr. No(1962) with Sean Connery as 007.

I totally concur with u and dig your mindset, like I said with Superman Returns, they completely disregarded Superman III and Superman IV from the franchise. They made Superman Returns the direct sequel to Superman II.
Also like I said, in the film company's pissbrain little noggin, they think BHC2 was too silly. I agree it is a tad more sillier than the first film, but it had some really moving, unsilly moments in it, which I think make the movie a good movie with some humor on the side. I do agree the ending was a wee bit silly, but hell, we're talking about Eddie Murphy. We aren't talking about Charles Bronson, Clint Eastwood, Robert Deniro, Al Pacino, or Sylvester Stallone(who was the original choice for the axel foley character).
In other words you can expect a comical ending with anything that has Murphy in it, doesnt mean the film is bad. After all, the man got his start on Saturday Night Live.

hallelujah You see the light man!!! But then again our constant fighting wont do anything...oh well i hope they pull something out of their asses to make this movie great.
I believe that following number 3 would actually make the sequel MORE gritty. Why? Because the third ended on a sort of grim note. I could entirely see Axel being a bit more strict in the way he does things, with the image of his killed comrades and near-death experiences making him have a more cynical outlook on life. Not entirely a burned-out cop movie, but with Axel being more serious.
Probably something like Axel F or A Beverly Hills Cop. You know how Hollywood acts as if they're too good for number titles nowadays.
I don't know how they're gonna make this a follow up from the first film? It would be hard to disregard 2 and 3. You'd have to nix-out Billy and Taggart.

I can understand disreguarding part 3 but honestly there was nothing all that wrong with part 2. This dosent seem like a franchise that would "ignore" continuity just because of a crappy sequel. They could just move on like the Lethal Weapon movies.

BHC 4 will not happen. Rumors that's all. Do you really think the studio will up front 100 million or so to make another film. Give me a break. Beverly Hills Cop is a 80's thing. If it doesn't take place in the 80's or feature a 80's soundtrack it's not Beverly Hills Cop. Also Eddie Murphy's career is pretty much finished. This film is a fantasy of Cop lovers. It will not happen. If it does it'll bomb, so let's pretend that BHC 2 was the last film, and that third film was something else.
They should make BHC 4 follow the third movie. The third movie wasn't as great as the first two, but i enjoyed it because of Eddie Murphy's acting. I think they should at least throw an "Axel the Fox" cameo in the 4th movie, as a reference.
Maybe they could have a kid carrying an Axel the Fox plush doll catch a glimpse of Axel Foley(who is wearing the same clothes as the doll), and then have the kid look back at the doll with a puzzled "that-man-looks-like-my-doll" face.
There's a fine line between direct sequel to the original and simply just not mentioning stuff from Parts II and III.
The only crucial events of the sequels that could even remotely be brought up are Taggart's retirement and the death of Inspector Todd, both of which happened in Part III.
I just don't see how a direct sequel will make any sense unless it's set in the 80s.
But I have no problem with Part IV being a direct sequel to Part I, my only concern is how they're going to treat the Foley/Rosewood/Taggart relationship, which developed offscreen between the first two films. I think trying to build up their friendship again would be kinda tedious.
Boy you got me confused with a man who repeats himself
I don't see why they didn't make a BHC 4 that takes place in Detroit...with a 'white collar' cop like Rosewood coming to Detroit and getting caught up in a situation there while visiting Axel...make an actual Beverly Hills Cop the subject of the title...with the action happening in another city. It could be just as much a 'fish out of water' story for Billy to be in Detroit as Axel being in L.A. in the first 3 films, but just a 'reversal' of location......
