Early 90s and Smoking

This movie popped into my head today, so I watched five minutes of it on youtube. That's when I realized something. All the "villains" of this movie are smokers, the deadbeat dad and the cocky reporter. Also the ballplayer who dies in the end (because of smoking). I am surprised there is not already a thread on this, but it's so cool to look back at this 16 year old movie, and notice this transitional phase from the 80s and 70s where everyone smoked, to movies today where you see NO ONE smoking. But it's such an interesting subtle way to teach kids that smoking is bad for you. (they're gonna try it anyway though)

It's also funny to see where they smoke. The dad smokes in Maggie's house and she's not a smoker. These days, most people would go outside to smoke. Mel smokes indoors, too.

I wonder if it was intentional to make all the bad people smoke or if it was a case of them wanting to make a few people smoke, but they didn't want any of the good people smoke, so all the bad people smoke (if that makes any sense).
