Graham and Patty's marriage

What do we think? Would their marriage have lasted? At the beginning of the series Graham was on the brink of an affair with an unseen woman. And by the end of the series, Graham was in an emotional affair with Hallie that was on the verge of becoming physical. He seemed like a nice guy who loved his family, but my goodness. Patty seemed pretty excited to see her ex in the series finale, but I can't see her getting into a situation that jeopardized her family.

It's funny how I barely paid attention to them when I originally watched the show as a teenager. Now that I'm a married parent myself, I find their storyline so fascinating. I could see the parents staying together until Danielle graduated from high school, then Graham would split for a younger woman.

The show's writer says in the DVD that they separate & reconcile.

"Sacred cows make the best hamburger."

I can see Graham and Hallie getting dangerously close to getting physical. Hallie rents a room, or invites him in to her apartment after he drives her home. One thing leads to another, but Graham leaves.

Patty hits the roof anyway, and they separate for a while. Graham is torn between trying to make things right with Patty, or running to Hallie for consolation.

He has a conscience (as we can see from his conversation with the first unseen woman), but he's in a very difficult position with Hallie. He doesn't even see how far down this road he really is. When he wakes up to it, he'd be at that "what have I DONE" stage.

I'm not sure how anyone could have stood being with Patty. I want to jump thru the screen and punch her in almost EVERY episode...she acts like she's 80 years old.

Aluminum foil I agree. I don't think graham would ever consciously hurt his family or seek out an affair but he really doesn't see how far down the road he is with hallie. And he's prett far down.

And for all pattys faults, graham seems to love her, he's just questioning his love. Without her, he's nothing though because she's the glue of that family.

I would Graham being involved in an affair by the second season. Patty would have found out, and by the end of that season, they would have made a painful announcement to their children that they were separating. The third season, Angela would be in turmoil in regards to college selection and her parents' divorce proceedings. Danielle, being in junior high and often feeling neglected by her family, joins the wrong crowd, and turns to drinking and smoking.
