didn't even know part 3 existed!

wow, i was surprised to find out there was a book 3 filmed until i went to purchase the DVDs. i was such a fan of books 1 & 2 and even taped it when it originally aired on the network. i guess i missed the part where they aired book 3. i also read books one and two, but never finished 3 as i didn't like the direction the story was going (especially since out beloved orry main was gone).

now i am about to buy the DVD set, but hesitate as i do not want to be tempted to watch book 3 and spoil my "memories"! i ask though, why they felt it necessary to make a book 3 if it could not be a fraction as agood as the first two books? and then, if they are going to rewrite it so much, why not rewrite it with orry still in it?? and why recast charles? and if they made the 3rd installment so much later that everyone "looked old" then i ask again, why even do it and spoil it for us?

if any of y'all out there have any inside info or gossip, do share!

thanks!

On the third DVD (which contains Book 3, Heaven and Hell) there is an excellent retrospective on the making of the miniseries, which is worth buying the set for. It features Patrick Swayze, James Read, Lesley-Ann Down, and the author John Jakes sharing their memories. The last novel in the trilogy came out several years later than the first two, so that's why the last movie was so long in coming. I couldn't stand Book 3, although I usually watch the scene where George and Madeline get together.
