They weren’t even on a break.
Rachel flat out dumped him.
shareI disagree. They weren't on a break because he didn't sit down and discuss it with her and come to an understanding; she made a suggestion and he stormed off........
shareRachel confirms it the next day tho in TOO the morning after when she says, "they were on a break" as if it were temporary.

It is temporary; like a trial separation where you're not together but there's still communication. There are three different phrases people say to you when they want to break up with you; they are
1. "I don't want to see you anymore."
2. "I think we should see other people."
3. "I'm breaking up with you it's over." [People tend to think that the third one is the most harsh]
She didn't say any of those phrases. Meanwhile, they didn't agree to break or break it off at all though. What happened was she came home from work and asked him to apologize and he wouldn't so surprise surprise, Toss and Rachel have yet another fight and he pressured her to come up with a solution right on the spot and she shouted, "UGH! Maybe we should just take a break!" Maybe, keyword is maybe and it's a curse for Rachel. Toss asked for frozen yogurt and she said, from us, but then he just walked out on her. The suggestion was just left up in the air because Toss refused to sit down and talk to her and agree to take the break that she just randomly suggested in an outburst. Had he done that and agreed first hand he could have said No to taking a break, or he could have said, yes let's take this break but bottom line, she remained faithful to him. He didn't remain faithful to her and if they were on a break then she could even spend it with Mark if she wants to, but Toss could have just waited one night without sex! Who cares if he missed his anniversary because she was working? Mark told him that Rachel would have less free time because Mark quit Bloomingdales, and what did he have planned anyways? Dinner reservations, maybe a movie? Toss could have gone one night with no sex.
"She didn't say any of those phrases."
What she did say the very next day was, "Can I be your girlfriend again?". Which means a break at the very least. So you just wasted another pointless rant...
Regardless....the entire "break" and "did Ross cheat", "once a cheater always a cheater" angle got really old.
None of that mattered.
The point was Ross slept with another woman....just hours after their little split. It does not matter if they all understood it to be a break. There is no way anyone would get back together when one of the parties had sex with someone during a 12 hour tiff break up. If they've already slept with someone by the next day, even if you had some time to cool off and you've slept on it and you know that you definitely do not want to break up and you knew all the emotions and stress had just gotten to you the day before.....when you reach out to say I'm sorry about yesterday, we'll work this out and I definitely want to be with you.....the moment their reply is "well I slept with some girl last night" the getting back together is dead.
If I had a spat with my girl and we sort of split one night and if I wanted to make up the next day and she tells me "well I went out last night and slept with some guy"......that kills the getting back together thought. She'd be dead to me.
Regardless of whether they were on a break or not.....Ross sleeping with a girl killed it. Ross being officially being given the credit for the relationship being on an official break would not absolve him of losing Rachel. Him sleeping with that girl killed things. No prayer of it not. It had been 4 or 5 hours after their fight. She was still emotionally connected to him. Him having sex was crushing no matter what.
I agree that regardless of the break happening or not (it did imo), it was bad. But I think the whole point was that the writers had to find a way to break them up without making Ross look that bad, hence the whole, "we were on a break" thing. I also think Mark being at Rachel´s place (whether it was her fault or not he was there), when Ross tried to talk things over with her makes what he did more forgivable, of course that is barely ever brought up.

I think pretty much everyone can agree on that, I think Ross even understood that. Although I have to point out that it wasn't just a tiff break from the perspective of Ross. Well, it was, until he discovered Mark was at Rachel's apartment and he thought she had dumped him for good.
The continuing debate about whether they were on a break or not actually goes back to the episode where Rachel agrees to take Ross back on the condition that he admits he cheated on her. This is simply not true and there's no reason for Ross to admit to this, especially since it absolves Rachel of any wrongdoing in their relationship.
It did come across as a little hypocritical from Ross, after he'd spent what seemed like forever blaming Rachel for her friendship with Mark. Whatever Mark's intentions were, Rachel hadn't done anything with him that would cause Ross to be so jealous. Yet within a few hours of having a row, Ross had jumped into bed with another woman.
As an audience, we saw how upset Ross by the argument and that he'd done something out of emotion and stupidity. But from Rachel's point of view, you could understand why she'd see it as a betrayal. It must've felt like Ross had jumped into bed the second he thought he was free. That probably wasn't Ross' intention, but does being drunk and upset justify jumping into bed with somebody else after you've spent a long time berating your girlfriend for a platonic work friendship? It's not like Ross even waited to see if the argument was permanent before getting with somebody else.
Bear in mind, in a later season Ross met Mark and commented that he thought the guy; "seemed nice" before he knew who he was.
There's two sides to everything, but it's not as simple as saying they were on a break, so Rachel was justified.
I agree with everything you said except that Toss was justified because he wasn't since they never talked it out and discussed rules for the break or came to an agreement, she just barely suggests it and he stormed out, so break was not agreed upon. Team Rachel for the win!
shareI think I meant to say Rachel, not Ross.
Edited my earlier post.
Rachel was equally at fault for having Mark over at her apartment.
shareShe broke up. He hooked up. The only time she ever wanted him was when he was with someone else.
