Ellen proposes to Laurie, but she doesn't want to get married when their union isn't legally recognized. In the end they make vows in private, for their own pleasure...
In short...

I thought the last episode was when Ellen's career was kind of Hollywood recapped, with cameos from other actors and faux moments in her career were recalled.
My favorite was Bea Arthur recollecting when she and Ellen were chorus girls in a musical version of the Hindenberg. Titanic was a big musical at that time, and just imagine Bea delivering that line. It was a riot.
Then she had a Saturday morning show "Ellen and Her Fun Bunch In Outer Space, . . . with the Harlem Globetrotters!"
This is a jab at the early seventies cartoon shows, Brady Kids (of the Brady Bunch), Hair Bear Bunch, Josie in Outer Space, and that the Harlem Globetrotters were in their own animated show, in 3 Scoobie movies and didn't they also have a live action show? Or am I thinking of the Hudson Brothers?
The Globetrotters would also return as Super Globetrotters.
She would end her show, or toward the end of this final episode, with herself now in a seventies sitcom, with her best friend over and Dad being outdated.
He would say something and when the audience would laugh, we would see Ellen looking to Dad, smiling.
As to her orientation, the episode simply said what she herself has always said; "what's the big deal?"
Nevertheless, I did get a kick out of the Hindenberg, Fun Bunch and even the final sitcom bits.
Yes the official final episode was the double episode "Ellen: A Hollywood Tribute" but two new episodes aired after this two months later - "When Ellen Talks People Listen" & "Vows" that were filmed before the final.
