Region doesn't matter to me ... But basically I want good quality picture, non-flipdiscs and THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON WITH THE PILOT.
So I'm confused ... Should I go for UK release, US release (there's two of season 1 - so which one?!), CA release - or what?

Well i have both UK and CA copies of all seasons and the CA ones are flip. i'd start with season 1 or buy THE COMPLETE DUE SOUTH BOX SET with all 4 seasons, it's good and has loads of special featuers on it including ride forever documentry, and it will save you money in long run. try this site for it i got mine there. Was just looking at the US ones. There seems to be two releases of Complete Season 1 - one with pilot episode, and one without....
ya it's confusing alright the only problem with those is they are filp one's and the only reason i have so many copies is they get damaged easier like mine did so i bought THE COMPLETE BOX SET from play.com saved me money buying them all seperate again just to let you know. i know how anoying it is when one breaks and ruins the hole box set.
