well im not sure about lincoln or draco but the 1st 'wolf' from the pilot episode, newman, was a siberian husky, which im led to believe is the closest relative to the wolf. which although isnt as cute but looks the part

The eternally cute Draco and Lincoln are also Siberian Huskies. Their colour is known as White with Reddish overtones.

In fact I have fallen for them so much that I am currently begging my hubby for a white huskey!!!!

I have two Siberians. They are 9 and are the best dogs. Great with kids. Tons of fur though, so get a good vacuum!!!!

We have a White German Shepherd dog since 2014 and they are even more beautiful than Dief :)And he makes similar noises. But oh dear, do they shed!!!
We finally purchased a Robot vacuum cleaner for pet hair. Hope it'll work.

There were two dogs that played Dief in the Pilot called Newman and Frankie and I do not believe they were huskies but Alaskan Malamutes or possibly husky/malamute crosses. If you watch carefully you will see that the Pilot dog was of heavier build than Lincoln or Draco and his coat and ruff were more profuse.

Lincoln and Draco themselves do not conform to the Siberian Husky breed standard as defined by the British Kennel Club. The most striking differences are height at the shoulder and tail carriage. They would be described as Canadian huskies.

My husband recently met someone walking a dog on the beach and as this dog looked just like Lincoln they naturally had a conversation about Due South and the dogs. Apparently there are only 3 or 4 breeders of "Canadian" huskies in the UK and a very small gene pool. This person waited nearly 2 years for a puppy. Siberian huskies are much easier to find as there are quite a few breeders who can be contacted via the Kennel Club

if there's any malamute in them it's very watered down as most round our way have "masks" across their eyes which i'm told is the main characteristic looks wise that separates the siberian which generally have white faces. Of course the guy who owns them could be talking out his pipe but i dont think he is.

There was a very different looking dog in the first episode (much darker and with longer fur). I'm pretty sure this one was an Alaskan Malamute, it certainly looked like the one we had when I was a child. The other one with that was mostly white & had the tail that curled back over itself was definitely a Husky.

You can still see the original dog at the end of the episodes during the credits. It's the dog that's walking behind benny as they walk through the snow and Benny falls down at the end.

Hope that helps! :)

Easy to find huskies in the Rockville, Maryland area. My high school was Robert E Peary, with a husky for a mascot (in the early years, an actual dog too). The area around the high school was reputed to have 11 times the national average in concentration of huskies.

Huskies are no less domesticated than any other breed. They have no more wolf blood than any other breed. Show Sibes and working Sibes dont even look similar. A show Sibe, although appearing fluffier and perhaps "wolfier" than the working lines, probably couldnt survive such extreme temperatures as their Northern relatives.

Although I love Diefe, he is nowhere near a believable wolf hybrid. He screams show line Sibe, especially with the dilute red nose. I have never seen a blonde wolf. A more believable wolf hybrid would have been a German Shepherd/Husky cross. One with wolf sable, silver sable, all white or possibly even black colouring.

The dog in the pilot definitely looked more "wolf-like." I always loved the others but to me they didn't look like wolves at all.

That's what we need - ridiculous odds, and just a speck of hope that someday, we'll beat it

Dief was SUPPOSED TO BE a wolf, but he didn't look like a wolf to me, he was definately played by some sort of husky which is a breed of dog
