Hue Millar (James Garner) invested money on the stock market in a computer company owned by a young guy named Skip Abelov. Skip had been in an accident which left him completely paralysed. He had invented some software which could help him regain the use of his limbs. Jack operated on him and implanted the microchips in his body and to begin with it looked successful. Then as Hue was watching the stock rise as a result of the successful operation, Skip had a heart attack and died.
This meant that Hue lost all his money, could not pay off the hospital debts and it would be sold for development and no longer be a hospital.
There were more goings on, but that's basically what happened.
Actually, Hugh sold the stock as it peaked. So they did make enough to pay off the debt and even had some left over. As the staff learned of Skip's death, the show was ended with Phillip's question of if they lost sight of who they should be trying to save, the hospital or the patients.
Also, a side storyline with Gina and Aaron. Gina collapsed and had to have emergency surgery because she had an ectopic pregnancy. The show ended with them realizing that they needed each other and would stay together.
Is that what happened?
I too thought Hubert (Hue) lost his money and the hospital would be sold off. Perhaps the ending was ambiguous because my impression was of disaster and not triumph.
Gina and Aaron were sweet together.
