While I agree the beginning was scariest, to be fair that level of fright would be hard to maintain for 2 hours.
I will say that this film is one of the very best efforts at trying this, for the whole film, that I've seen in a long long time.
The way that one never knew where this seemingly supernatural psychopath was or wasn't was terrifying!
I do wish that a little bit more of Landis' background was revealed, but the film did provide more than some people notice (listen closely to his strip club dialogue), and the ending definitely needed to be stronger regarding Julia.
But I love it all the same, I watch it quite often on DVD.
