Did Ike really face away from the audience during performances?

That was a nice creepy touch, this hot-tempered control freak spending the performances glaring at the band like he's ready to punch the first musician who hits a wrong note.

I wonder if that was authentic, or invented for the film?

The real reason why he faced away from the audience a lot was because in real life Ike had stage fright. At least from what I read. He also had to keep the time with everything and let them know when to stop.
