Domestic violence should be deemed a mental illness
I find it so hard to comprehend what would possess anyone to do that to the one they supposedly love. Why is this not deemed a mental illness?

I disagree. IMHO the legal system ought to treat beating a family member as severely as mugging a stranger on the street.
People don't typically hit their loved ones because they're mentally ill, they hit their loved ones because they think it's okay to use violence to get their way. An awful lot of people think that fists are a normal part of a relationship, and others think that if they can get away with it, they will. Legal punishments and civil penalties are the only way to reeducate these peole.
