Angela looked nothing like Tina

Dont get me wrong, Angela is a great actress. However her teethy grin, muscly arms and way too dark skin made her the wrong choice for Tina. Tina's skin colour ws much lighter thn Angela's. I think Angela made Tina look very unattractive throughout the whole movie. I never once believed she was Tina.

I have always loved Tina Turner, and I'm going through a phase where I'm revisiting all of her old material -- music, videos, her book, this film, etc.

I agree with you. Love Angela Bassett, but could never really see her as Tina Turner, for all of the reasons you've outlined -- too dark, too muscled.

And the soundtrack was a bad idea? Tina Turner and Lawrence Fishburn duets? What? If Angela Bassett lypsyncs to Tina, why can't Fishburn do the same with Ike's vocals? Rerecording classics from the 60's and 70's was just a bad idea.

Who do you think would've made a better Tina?

Don't eva let nobody tell you you ain't strong enough

I think an unknown actress would have been a better choice. Someone who looked the part, someone who could convince me that I'm watching Tina Turner onscreen.

Again, I love Angela Bassett and think she is a fine actress. I just love Tina Turner more, and would liked to have seen a more accurate depiction.

Thanks for answering, MisterLaser. Although I personally enjoyed Angela's portrayal of Tina, sometimes it is good to pick an unknown for roles like that since you come to their performance with no preconceived notions.

I agree, they should've picked an unknown. Also, Angela couldn't dance like Tina. The other 3 ladies - the Ikettes - performing Proud Mary danced much better.

Queen Latifa. The battles of Ike and Tina Turner would have been EPIC!

Angela Bassett was incredible as Tina Turner, delivering one of the finest female performances EVER. She won the Golden Globe (Musical/Comedy) for 1993. She was nominated for an Oscar, and had it not been for Holly Hunter in The Piano, would have easily trumped her competition.

She lip syncs wonderfully. She moves effortlessly on the stage. She radiates raw emotion with inner strength. You don't have to look the the icon you're portraying to give a believable performance as that said idol. Laurence Fishburne looked nothing like Ike either, but gave a hell of a starring turn.
I've seen biopics where they pick someone ONLY Because they looked a little like the star, but the performance is wooden.
