I still can't figure out why she cared so much that he was dead. Did the sisters know that Gilbert was having an affair with Mrs. Carver?? I realize it was such a shock to the town and that everyone thought she killed him, but for Ellen to have such a fit over it was strange to me.

My guess is that Ellen knows about (or suspects) Gilbert's affair with Mrs. Carver, and this is just another of her personal attacks on him, not genuine, personal concern for Mr. Carver.
