i just baught and watched the hell on earth boxset and here are my thaughts....
movies one and two are cut in the boxset, so i know there are scenes missing, but they were still great. but i think the best part about the series was Urotsukidoji III. that blew me away. it was so epic and action packed it got me so excited to see part IV. But part IV ended up as a peice of *beep* in my eyes. the first two episodes tell a pointless story about phychic kids that have no impact on the plot. and the last episode was also bad. the monsters looked dumb, it was so short, and the ending came by so fast.
now i could have stomached the whole "everything starts over again" ending if the whole story of the last episode was longer. it started and ended so fast it seemed to go by in the blink of an eye. oh well. i'll just never watch Urotsukidoji IV ever again and just stick to the first three Urotsukidojis.
next i'm gonna get the perfect collection so i can see the first two Urotsukidojis uncut.
I had a similar problem with this chapter as well. It's not that I didn't like the story. I figured the whole "Secret Garden" story was there to teach the Kyo-o (and the viewers) about how adulthood and sex weren't things to be feared or hated, as the Children of the Corn (for lack of a better term) viewed it. Plus, seeing how they portrayed the apocalypse as the Ultimate F---, it made sense they would cover the theme of illegitimate children. And I liked how it followed a coming-of-age structure with the Kyo-o. So she's born in Part 3, and in "The Secret Garden," she goes to "school" (meets other kids, gets her education) and in the last episode, finally reaches puberty. Of course, none of these factors make it a good section of the overall story or make it well-told. Plus, there's no Megumi, no Muhnihausen, and they spent so much time introducing a whole team of characters in part 3, only to have half of them in the next section. I call it a noble failure. And though I really liked "The End of the Journey," if they hadn't spent so much time on "The Secret Garden," they could've done more with it, or at least made it longer and not as swiftly paced. And, from what I've heard about the making of the series (please don't take this as etched-in-stone fact), I think this was then the production team started having creative difficulties. My whole problem was the fact that they spend the entire ending of part 3 setting up this part 4 journey, they take to that long, hard Inferno Road and have a total of one adventure. That's it, ONE. Then comes the finale. I liked the story, but I didn't like how they spent two episodes on "The Secret Garden" and only one on "The End of the Journey." And I fully agree the finale was more than a little rushed. I liked the ending, but it as I said before, they needed to spend more time on it, and if they didn't spend so much time messing around in "The Secret Garden," they could have. No one argues that Urotsukidoji is flawed. But a flawed masterpiece is a masterpiece none-the-less. But rather than excluding part 4, try just going from part 3 directly to "The End of the Journey" and skip "The Secret Garden" completely. It might work better. And I've said this before, and I'll say it again. This is one of the best, most civilized and fascinatingly insightful boards the imdb has to offer. Nobody has some snotty attitude about their "expertise," nobody acts as though their opinion is the only one that matters, and most importantly to me, nobody thinks that their's or anyone else's taste or views on movies is a gauge of intellect. To all of you, I raise a glass.
Wow, I wasn't aware there was an anti-Overfiend element in the Naruto fanbase. Odd. Are there any other anime factions that are against each other? But I guarantee you if they gave us a Urotsukidoji videogame, it would be WAY better than any of theirs. And sell many more copies as well!
Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you about the Demonwomb/episode 4 & 5 screwiness. Okay, in the Perfect Collection set, episodes 4 and 5 are the original episodes that made up Legend of the Demonwomb, BUT even though the set brags its the "uncut" versions, these episodes are airbrush censored in certain shots. BUT in the Hell on Earth boxed set, you can see it without the blurred naughty bits. Plus, they didn't really edit out any scenes when they put them together with Legend of the Demonwomb, its just episodes 4 and 5 back to back (which, in my humble opinion, works better in the one-movie structure than two seperate episodes). The biggest advantage to the Perfect Collection version is that is has Muhnihausen's original, untranslated dialogue with subtitles. And his original dialogue is much better than the crappy Darth Vader-esque English version, and without the Ah-nuld-on-novacane delivery too. Rather than just spewing out the monotonous "come to the dark side" tripe to Takiyaki, he actually makes convincing arguments for pessimism, power hunger, and all-around bad behavior. Even for the world of Urotsukidoji, that guy is just an a******. Kinda interesting how Muhnihausen and Caesar, who are the biggest villians in this saga, are humans, not demons. Now that's pretty damning comdemnation of human nature if I ever heard one. God I love these movies!
you mean there are no new scenes in the perfect collection versions of Demon Womb?
yeah. urotsukidoji is a masterpeice in my opinion. it's one of the best animes ever.
and i don't know if Naruto fans are prejudice against Urotsukidoji. i was just using it as an example. since they are ignorant kids that don't know anything and think that Urotsukidoji is "just another hentai". them along with a lot of other anime fans think that. but they are all the idiots that like crap like Full Metal Alchemist and Bleach. so they are idiots.
No new scenes at all! They literally just glued episode 4 and 5 back to back, and Legend of the Demonwomb doesn't have the annoying airbrushing over certain shots. And its one of those non-sensical censoring things too, they show the whole Nazi Death Rape Machine scene untouched, and after a scene like that, does it really MATTER anymore? Like the airbrushed version would be okay for kids? It's like the edited-for-TV version of The Shining, they have no problem showing two blood spattered corpses of two young girls, but to show the nude woman coming out of the bathtub or someone cursing, that's just not suitable for TV! But don't get me started on that, I'll go on for paragraphs... But Perfect Collection is worth it for the uncut episodes that made up Legend of the Overfiend. There's a lot of great shots, scenes, and a lot of odds and ends that give it some very nice touches. And personally, I think the storylines work better in the three episode structure, particularly when they start jumping around chronologically. Showing the 1923 earthquake works better as an opening to the episode, rather than a sudden cut to a catastrophe 70-years ago midway through the story. And Nikki is MUCH scarier in the uncut version and more Suikakiju is a good thing in my book. And the Legend of the Demonwomb episodes are worth it for Muhnihausen's original dialogue, if nothing else. But after hearing it, you can just pretend that's what he's saying when viewing Demonwomb, rather than that terribly translated and read *beep* I hope you enjoy it!
i thaught somthing was strange. since The Legend of the Demon Womb movies was around 88 minutes and that would be about the same amount of time as two ova episodes. but the perfect collection was way worth it for the uncut legend of the overfeind ovas. there were so many awsome scenes.
I'm far from being an anime expert, so I'm not 100% sure about all the terms. The only term I really know is hentai, and that's because of the Urotsukidoji controversy ("It's hentai!" "No, it's not!"). What does OVA stand for/mean? And what does mecha mean for that matter? And is there some genre called ecchi or something? Thanks for any help on this.
"OVA" means "Original Video Animation". an OVA is a direct to video release that usually has a higher budget than a TV series but usually does not have as high a budget as a movie.
mecha is used to decribe mechanical things in anime. animes that revolve around giant robots are usually called mecha animes.
i'm not exactly sure what ecchi is. but i think it is gay porn.
Thanks, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to terminology. Okay, so with mecha, that explains what the hell they were talking about on the Samurai 7 board. And you're probably right about the ecchi (definite sp? there), considering the context of the conversation, that's more than likely what it means. Thanks again. "But, hey, that's me, I could be wrong."
