Madonna as the lead
Hard to believe but Madonna was supposed to star in this but she backed out. She would have been 33 when this was filmed. I could never picture her as a sweet girl like Caroline.

i think if madonna was in this, the caroline role would have been more of a whore.
I KNOW 2 things that are clear.I'm a great sinner,Christ is a great Savior.
Madonna would have ruined this movie
Boston and Philly love to slander us, but they don't have as many fans as us
Even if Madonna had been younger, she would have ruined the role of Caroline. She's not a good enough actress, and is just too hard and brittle to be believable in the role.
She couldn't have moved us, touched us like Marisa did.
I guess it's like looking at clouds. You see one thing and I see another. Peace.
I watched this movie originally when it first came out, and apparently didn't remember that much about it, (good or bad), or I would have watched it since then. I sort of remember going to the movie theater with my wife for nearly all the movies back then, but I was working 60-70 hour weeks, with a three hour round trip commute, so it's possible I didn't exactly see the entire movie... ZZZZ... (no fault of any of the movies...)
Now, in the wake of the death of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, (was in BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD with Marisa Tomei), and I caught a bit of this show while flipping channels, I thought I'd watch the whole thing again. I did look it up on IMDB, and discovered the Parents Review listed something I did not remember seeing, I watched the DVD version (PG-13, bought used, years ago), and the Parent's Review seemed less than "very accurate".
(From another thread on this board, it seems NETFLIX has employed a marketing trick to help their own popularity... HBO used to air movies *without masks* (showing previously out-of-frame/International things) when they were still a young pay-cable channel, maybe for the same reason.)
I was no less than amazed at how thin Tomei was in the movie, (I guess she was still young then, and hadn't quite 'grown into her skin', and yet, IMDB would have her around 28 at the time; born 1964, movie came out in 1993...). Madonna never looked that thin, (even in video of her as a jazz dancer), or that "adorable". I do not remember her being that thin in MY COUSIN VINNY (1992), even though it was released a year before this.
Madonna would have changed the entire tone of the movie, and *might have* carried it on her name alone, like Jennifer Lopez carried GIGLI (**smirk**).
No way Madonna's casting would have worked. -- Now on the other hand, if the casting folks were *dangling* the popular Madonna to get some *name* male talent... well that wouldn't exactly be a new tactic, would it?
And speaking of Madonna, that remake version of SWEPT AWAY didn't seem to exactly boost her career either.
While I agree that Madonna would have been terrible in this. She was involved up to 5 years before the film was made and the script had gone extensive rewrites to become the movie we all know. when Madonna was involved, the film was to be set in NJ and her character was not very sweet at all.
as for your comment about Madonna being 33, What is wrong with that? Marisa was 30-33 when this was filmed, depending on who you talk to about her birthday.
