Escalator at the Mall

I love this movie, but one scene always bugged me. The day after those creeps attack Caroline at the park. Caroline is shown all disheveled and anxious at the mall. While she is going up the escalator, Adam is going down and reaches out and grabs her hand, which of course freaks Caroline out. This scene bugs me because it is so out of character for Adam- if he is so sensitive and perceptive, why would he manhandle her like that?

I wouldn't characterize that as manhandling her. I'm not so sure that was the next day either. I'm guessing it was a few days afterward and when she didn't show up at work (I think they said she was out for a week) for a while he was just concerned. And since he rarely spoke that was his way of seeing if she was ok.

I don't think his touch was rough either. It also startled her.

If I remember, I thought he just touched or brushed her hand, not grabbed it.

Yeah, he just brushed it and the important thing to remember is that Adam lacked the confidence to just say,"Hey Caroline, you have not been at work for a few days? Are you OK?" It was not in line with who he was.

I actually thought that scene was beautiful. Adam is painfully shy, and yet, reaches out to touch Caroline. The sunlight in that scene gives it a warmth, Adam's longing stare after her, it's like he represents everything those rapists are not...someone who wants to protect her and make her happy. I think Caroline was initially startled, but she keeps looking after him with an intrigued look on her face... really one of my favorite scenes of the whole movie.

Fantastic description of the scene & I could not agree more. This was the moment I feel in love with Adam myself haha.

Incidentally, it makes perfect sense that someone who was practically raped and beaten to death would go to the mall.

Well it DOES when you think about it.

She doesn't want anyone to know. She called in sick from work to hide her trauma and it's the run up to Christmas.
She probably forced herself to go to the mall in order to appear normal to her family.

I wouldn't say he "manhandled" her, but the gesture definitely didn't ring true to me either.
