What did Caroline do in the basement at the party?

This may have been asked before, or maybe they explained it in the movie, but what did she do that was embarrassing?

---The part I am talking about is when she is serving those two guys at the diner (the ones who attempt to rape her) and they said that they had recognized her from some party.

I don't know what the words were that he said... something like "sloaching fizzes?" WTF?

LOL, but the other guy said something like "You were puking up stuff that your grandma ate." Implying that she got very drunk and threw up all over the place. Probably not much more to it than that.

I don't know if I've lived 10,000 days, or one day 10,000 times...

I don't know what was said either. They should put out a new edition of this film with subtitles and deleted scenes. I think the scene with the guys in the diner was just to establish that Caroline had a past and liked to party (though she doesn't do much of anything like that for the rest of the film). You get the impression that she had a lot of boyfriends.

OH MY GOD. Thank you, this has bothered me since the 90s! I had never heard of "sloe gun fizzes" before.

It's funny. I haven't seen this movie in years, but I channel surfed on to it today and missed the scene in question. I have no recollection of this scene, but as soon as I read, "sloaching fizzes," I knew it was "sloe gin fizzes". It's sort of like that game where you get phrases like, "Eye Mull of Machine" and have to figure out what it is. 

I do not have attention deficit disor...Ooh, look at the bunny! 

He said, "Sloe gin fizzes?" That's a mixed drink made with sloe gin, (a red liqueur) lemon soda, lemon juice, club soda, and sparkling water. So yes, the implication is that she got really drunk, and liked to flirt.

Did anyone get the impression the "party" as referenced by the two would-be rapists was a few years in the past? Maybe like when they were still in high school?

Either way, seemed as if she was once in someone's basement drunk on sloe gin fizzes. Did she mess around with some guys? Or did she just tease them?

On one hand there's an implication she might have made out with one or more of the guys at the basement party...and this motivates the two would-be rapists, who are lowlifes and think she's easy.

On the other hand there's also an implication she was really drunk at the basement party and flirted with the two would-be rapists...who, years later, caught up with her at the diner and decided to do what "they should've done" at the party.

I like the ambiguity. When first seeing the film, the former situation came to mind. Seemed like she drunkenly made out with one (or more) of the guys at the party...just NOT the two guys who later met up with her at the diner. Also seemed at first blush as if this incident had been a high school indiscretion or at least a few years previous to the film.

I saw this movie for the first time last week on late night TV. A nice film. The second guy seemed a bit older, like maybe in his 30's, than the guy who attacked Caroline. I had a hard time understanding them too. I do recall either the attacker went to high school with Caroline or knew her in the neighborhood.

reply

LOL. You could have just rewound it and turned on the subtitles. The other poster was right, of course it was sloe gin fizzes. She was just embarrassed because she must have gotten rather wasted that night.

I wonder since they were rapists, maybe they were making up something so they figured Caroline would deserve it. I'll have to see the film again.

I assumed she was probably a bit promiscuous in high school. She mentions her father running out on her and ever since she has always chased love. As a teen girl without a decent father figure, sometimes you end up confusing sex with love. I think the guys she ran into knew her from a party in high school and decided she needed to be brought down a peg or two because they were obviously still back in the high school mentality by partying and cruising till 4am. She had moved on and grown up. They hadnt, and seeing her was a reminder of just how much losers they were and they wanted power over her. The act of rape is about power and control, not sex. I also got the impression that was a reason she didnt want to tell anyone about what happened as well. Once youve been branded as someone that others think youve asked for or deserved bad attention, its very difficult to come forward and face a scrutinized past that you have worked so hard to move on and forget.

I think all that happened at the party was she got plastered. When they mention the sloe gin fizzes, she says, "Oh yeah, that was really embarrassing." There's nothing to imply she was hooking up with guys at the party. She just humiliated herself by getting drunk and sick.

The way i understood it was that Caroline used to be a big partier and probably teased and flirted with a lot of boys back then. The basement thing maybe she got drunk and made out with them..or someone else..and it ended with her sick.

Then years later they expect her to be the same girl and expect her to have sex with them but she changed and wasnt like that anymore
