first time i saw the movie, i thought it was from the early 80's until i recognized marisa tomei and christian slater.
could it be that it is set in an earlier period? i think its set in the late 70's and early 80's. the cars in the movie also look very old.
I think it was supposed to take place when it was released (1993). Even in 1993, records weren't around and the ones he had looked like they were from the 50s. These 20 somethings didn't have good jobs and the cars they could afford would have been older.

I believe they are in Minnesota though, some places are stuck in the past. I listened to records and bought records in 93 on the East Coast.
