Anyone else annoyed by the ending?

I mean, all her life men have been leaving Caroline, her dad, her boyfriends, and now even Adam the first true love of her life. The worst part of all is that he chose to leave her because of a memory. He could have chosen to fight to live to be with her, but instead he chose to leave by not doing the operation.

instead of feeling sad at the end, i was more annoyed with the character Adam. I didnt even cry, which is weird cause i always cry with these types of movies. But it was just so pointless, i feel bad for caroline, that shes alone all over again.

When I first watched the film in 1993, I felt bad for both of them. Now watching it again as an adult, I still feel sad in a way but I actually found BOTH of them ANNOYING!
Adam is a douche for how he dealt with things, especially about that whole 'memory' and 'its my HEART' thing. Yeah its a DISEASED heart Adam!
He knew he was dying, he could have at least given it a chance, and he didn't even care.

Caroline annoyed me to no end because she was so immature. The way she just threw away her hairdressing test because of a bitchy woman with 4 hairs, was so dumb.
This whole film leaves you with a pointless feeling.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

those are the same things that bothered me. i was expecting to start crying by the end of the film because i knew it was a tragedy, but i was left feeling annoyed instead of sad. Mind you, im the girl that watches a sad movie and cries every time.

SAME HERE.
I first saw this as a naive, sentimental teenager and couldn't stop crying after the movie ended. The chemistry between the two characters was so strong and I felt so connected to them that the movie stayed with me for an entire week.

Now I just re-watched this as an adult and all I could do was get angry and annoyed at both of them, for not fighting to live, not fighting to do everything possible to be there for one another.

I actually found it irritating as well even though it didn't seem all that strange for him to behave that way. On one hand it seems ridiculous that someone would choose to die that way but on the other it seems not that weird because the guy was obviously not "normal" and genuinely believed all the baboon heart stuff so it isn't shocking that he'd be the way he was over it.

The other thing is that the odds of anything working out for him in terms of a heart transplant were so astronomical that I doubt him deciding otherwise would have made a difference especially because it is implied that he died so soon after that whole thing.

you're right, if he passed so fast, his body must have been weakened already. I didnt think of that.But i guess i would have felt better about the ending if he had cared more about her than whatever he was told about the baboon heart.

If he had at least tried the surgery for her, even if he didnt make it. just felt like he gave up too easily.

But it wasn't the gorilla heart thing that stopped him from having the operation, it was because he was afraid he wouldn't love her the same with a different heart, which he told her. Yeah, it's a bit silly, but he just didn't understand how it works.

I'm not convinced that he totally refused to have the operation. At first he was adamant about keeping his 'baboon' heart but I think he was probably warming up to the idea when he saw how much it/he meant to Caroline but then he ran out of time. :S

I thought the whole thing about the "baboon heart" was idiotic in the extreme and Adam's fears that if he had a heart transplant he would not be able to love Caroline in the same way were equally stupid. So I found the whole character of Adam an irritant on several levels.

That being said, Adam's death scene was all about Marisa Tomei and I think she was sensational. Since we in the audience figure out what has happened just a moment before it starts to dawn on Caroline, her horror and grief are vivid and real and although the Adam character did not have to die it was still sad and I grieved for her if not with her. Tomei managed to save what would otherwise have been an utterly pointless movie.

I was annoyed by the ending as well. Adam must have been a couple fries short of a Happy Meal over the whole baboon heart thing. One, because he thought that he had a baboon's heart, and two, he refused the operation because he thought he wouldn't be able to love Caroline the same way if he had the operation. Those thoughts are more than the thoughts of a total introvert, those are the thoughts of a really truly stupid or mentally screwed up guy. Maybe the writers thought that girls would thing it was so romantic, but it ended up just making him look like an idiot.

And what the hell is wrong with an ending where he gets the operation and they go on as usual, or if they had to go the death route, why couldn't it happen after the operation? I hate chick flicks that have to be all dramatic with the we love each other so much that one of us dies at the end and the one that is alive ends the movie smiling? Bullshyt.

I'm obviously alone in my thinking but I thought the ending was a good one ending on a positive note. As sad as it was to lose Adam, I was happy that Caroline received his gift of cherished records and I loved the note he put with them that he was "Finished" because she completed him. I liked the tale of the Baboon King and the sensitivity and innocents of Adam's character.
