Mice Question - SPOILERS!

I have just watched this film for the first time and really enjoyed it. One thing did puzzle me though - why Julie borrowed the cat to kill the mouse & it's babies, (I personally thought it looked more like a rat & babies, but the dialogue begs to differ!). I can understand that she did not want to be reminded of the motherhood/child scenario, but also surely she could now appreciate more than ever the value of life?

Just wondered what anyone else thinks.

(I don't think that it was just because she disliked vermin, in case anyone thinks so!)

I think the answer to your question was in the dialogue between Julie and her mother. Julie asked her mum that if she afraid of mice when she was a child. Throughout the conversation we understand that Julie was the one who was afraid of mice. And her mother also said Marie France was strong and did not afraid of anything. Anyway my opinion about Julie killing that mouse and its babies has the same concept with the movie. Julie was trying to be libre and want to leave her past far behind. She was trying to forget all the dependencies she has, her love, her doughter, her music, and also her fears.

The point is that julie has liberated herself from emotion so therefore she does not appreciate the value of life.
