falling piano lid (possilbe spoiler)

When Julie is playing the piano and slowly pushes her hand against the piano support, do you think she lets the lid fall on her hand? I thought that was coming, but then I figured she'd show more of a pained expression on her face if this were so, just as she did when she scraped her hand against the stone wall. Both of which are obviously done because she would rather feel physical pain than the emotional pain of losing her husband and daughter.

good movie.

I don't think she let the lid fall on her hand, no.
My interpretation of that scene is more like: "I won't write anymore music...ever again".

Amazing film IMHO.

RIP Ian....

i for one most definitely think it was both

From what I remember, she wasn't actually playing. I think that she was hearing her husband's music in her mind and by closing the piano lid she was able to shut out the painful memory.

I agree. I have just watched it again and she was standing at the side of the piano, hence easily accessing the lid prop. I have to say, I thought she dropped it on her hand the first time too, but when there was no pain/bandages in further scenes I watched it again to confirm.

Thank you all for the great replies and confirmation I was looking for.

The way the scene is filmed, the lid ought to have dropped on her hand as she does not appear to withdraw same.

Nah, I think she just put the lid down, consciously or semi-consciously , to shut her late husband out of her life. That's pretty much what she's up to for the first thirty minutes or so of the movie. Actually finishing the piece towards the end of the film was an act of closure. Throwing it in a garbage truck and closing the piano was the set-up, or at least part of it.
