Kieslowski's use of Red in Three Colours: Blue

I'm looking at Three Colours: Blue for an exam on thursday, and have spent a lot of time looking at the use of the colour blue in the film. When I watched again yesterday, I noticed that there are a few scenes that have very strong red hues. I know Kieslowski wouldn't use red filters (which I'm sure he must have done for the effect) for no reason. Scenes for example are in the hospital at the beginning and the final shot of Julie's mother during the 1 Cor 13 Chorale. I initially thought red could represent pain (Julie's pain, but also the inner emotional pain of Lucille which seems evident in the final shot of her when she's sat, almost despondent, away from the 'action' so to speak), but this doesn't seem to fit with the closing shot of her mother.

Anyone have any ideas?

Since it is used symbolically, it may mean many things.

The director likes to refer back and forth to the other parts of the trilogy. Could have been that.

Red can also symbolize love.
