Missing Subtitles in DVD?

I watched the trilogy again recently on DVD, and I noticed a lack of subtitles at the end when the chorus of the music is playing. It is mentioned earlier in the movie that the words are from the Bible. (I reproduced it below.) I thought this was disappointing, since the words of the chorus do seem to have important meaning in relation to the character and the story. Does anyone know if I just had the wrong DVD settings, or if these subtitles are actually missing from the DVD?

Though I will speak with the tongue of angels,
If I have not love
I have become as hollow as brass
Though I have the gift of prophecy,
And understand all mysterires,
And all knowledge...
And though I have enough faith
To move the mightiest mountains,
If I have not love, I have nothing.
Love is patient. Love is kind.
It bears all things,
It hopes all things.
Love never fails.
For prophecie’s shall fail.
Tongues shall cease,
Knowledge shall wither away.
And knowlege shall abide
Faith, hope and love.
But the greatest of these three,
Is love.

Hiya

unfortunately this section is not subtitles. its ridiculous considering the words are of such significance. Interestinglt the UK DVDs (see amazon.co.uk) include subtitles for this section.

That is true!! When I saw it in Mexico, Blue had subtitles (in spanish, of course) about the final song! Now in here (US) any edition on VHS, Laserdisc or DVD (I have them all) there are no subtitles at all.
Great work by providing the lyrics of that interesting song :-)

I had forgotten about it, but my husband noticed it immediately. We got out our tape and watched the ending, and of course the subtitles are there. And yes, the ending loses a great deal of meaning without the words from that wonderful passage found in 1 Corinthians 13.

I will say one thing: I noticed that with our videotape, I found myself looking to the bottom of the screen to read the subtitles, rather than watching the entire frame in that closing sequence. So in some ways, the subtitles are a bit distracting. But that's the only reason I can think of for why they would have been removed. Or perhaps it was just an oversight? It would be nice to see some definitive answer to this question.

Bleu has just been released in a special edition DVD in Brazil (a brazilian partnership with MK2) and the subtitles for the greek finale are missing as well.

I think they simply ripped off subtitles.

I just posted an angry review on Amazon.com for this very reason. Incredible ignorance on the part of Miramax!

I am convinced that the subtitles do give that extra bit of emotional impact at the end of the film. You will find them on the UK (Region 2) Artficial Eye DVD which has been around for some time now, and at the time of writing is available for under £10 on the internet. Dig into your pocket and happy viewing!

You may not care so much after 3 years, but the subtitles are there on the region 4 DVD I hired recently.

I noticed this right away when I bought the Region 1 Buena Vista DVD of "Blue" and I was SO DISAPPOINTED. It just takes away a huge amount of the enjoyment and emotional impact of the movie. The story basically builds to this moment when the full symphony and chorus are being performed and we see the montage of images. But without the subtitles we have NO IDEA what is being sung.

HUGE MISTAKE by Buena Vista! Hopefully when/if this gets released by Criterion and/or on Blu-Ray, this error will be rectified. Until then, I just do not find watching this film quite as rewarding without these crucial subtitles in this climactic scene.

I am hopeful that the new Criterion edition of "Blue" will have these missing subtitles during this scene.

I'll be curious to see if any of the first to purchase it can report whether these subtitles are on the Criterion edition during this chorus music scene/montage at the end of the film.

reply

Yes, there are subtitles during the closing montage (from 1 Corinthians, Chapter 13).
So good to see/hear this wonderful film in all its Blu-Ray glory. Another job well done by Criterion.

Terrific! Thanks for responding and informing me of the news.
I'm looking forward to receiving my copies of the entire Criterion Three Colors Trilogy.
