Why rated R?
Why is this movie rated R? What type of possible objectionable content is in it?
shareI assume it is because of the nudity during the scenes at the nightclub where Sandrine works.
shareand she has sex twice. That's why because there's sex stuff in it
shareAmerica is still conservative about sex. Maybe its got to do with those christian fundamentalists. Enough said.

what the hell does witnessing sex in a movie have to do with getting pregnant? really i think it has more to do with the human libido, that everyone has regardless of the content of movies they may or may not watch.
to teach about sex is the #1 method of avoiding teen pregnancy. Especially teaching about and encouraging contraceptives. In Norway (where I am from) it is the government's job to inform kids about that kind of stuff. in Junior and senior highschools, as well as commune-sposored youth-centres one can get free condoms and contraceptive pills...
anyway, the major reason the film is rated R is that it is a foreighn film. Unlike Hollywood, it does not have the resources, or is unwilling to pay for lobbying the cencorship offices. Nor do the cinemas expect huge profits on it.
Specifically, I think the R rating is for the scene where her dancer neighbor lady is rubbing her dance partners c*ck and b*lls to get him "ready."
sharei dont think it should be rated r. no one is naked. no language. no violence. i would rate it pg-13.
shareHonestly, I think the R Rating goes beyond the nudity or sexuality... the themes in the film are very intense and might not be suitable for someone as young as 14... I mean, this isn't a movie about a bad break up it's about real, intense human loss... I don't know that at 14-17 I would have been able really engage with, let alone process and and handle that kind of subject matter. My heart broke with julie...
shareThey gave AMELIE an R rating as well. One has to wonder why since as in BLEU the sex was minimal, and comical.
Meh.
Ratings.
Well, I saw the films first when I was 14. It was one of the most intense experiences of my life. Thanks for writing off young people as brainless idiots, incapable of real feeling or understanding. If most people think like you, there's no wonder why the world is getting more and more stupid (also in the emotional sense).
shareAmen to that temps_perdu!
shareI saw this movie in school as a part of educating when we were about 15. What's there that Americans find damaging to youth???
Never go to bed angry, stay awake and plot your revenge.
Please, what kind of sexuality/nudity was in it? Any at all?
I'm asking about the DVD version, not the TV version.
I want to see this film, but I may not be allowed...
I was 14 when I first saw it, and instantly it became one of my favourite films. I handled the themes pretty well; I cried, I felt, I was glued to the screen for the whole 90 minutes. I rewatched it more recently and it did the same things for me then as it did before.
The thing is, I don't think you can pigeon-hole ages like that. There may be several 11 year olds out there capable of watching this film. Likewise, there might be a number of 50 year olds who would hate it. And it's not like the moment you become 18 you instantly become able to process the subject matter.
As a matter of fact, I'm 17 now. My best friend, same age, is similarly mature when it comes to films. Hundreds of other people in my classes are not. We went to see Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" for a history trip, and 99% of the people said it was boring and awful, simply because they didn't know what to do with a film that was inviting open interpretations and had heavy emotional content. I, my friend, and two others loved it. Curiously, only one of the teachers enjoyed it (out of six others who didn't).
In twenty years time I'm sure those people will still hate the Master. Some may come round, I imagine most won't.
My point is, you label age as the defining factor in handling mature films such as this. I'd argue the opposite. It's who you are that dictates whether you handle mature films such as this.
