After 16 years, I revisited this film, and OMG....
what an astonishing performance by Juliette Binoche! The last time I saw this film was in 1999, and I saw it again last night. I didn't remember much of the film, as it had been so long since I had seen it. Upon the rewatch, I was completely floored by Juliette's performance. The stoicalness of her character after the accident felt so real. To think that this performance was overlooked by the Oscars who opted for Holly Hunter just using sign language.
Also, back in 1999, I wasn't at all familiar with the actress Emmanuelle Riva. I hadn't seen any of her other films until I saw Amour a few years ago. So, when I saw her name in the closing credits, I was very surprised learn that she plays Juliette's mother in this film. I loved Emmanuelle's short-but-delightful part.
I wrote a review of this film in 1999, and at the time, I didn't like the film that much. But now, I like it a lot. I gave it a rating of 10. I could watch this film over and over. I like the subtle pace of it, as well as the intriguing cinematography.
