Ike Clanton was the boss of the cowboys?

I've just watched Wyatt Earp and The Cowboy War (https://moviechat.org/tt33038128/Wyatt-Earp-and-the-Cowboy-War), and according to it's historical take Ike Clanton was the leader, or at least A leader, of the cowboys.

Why then in this movie is he portrayed as some kind of foolish dipshit hanger-on?

There are many idiots in charge of gangs even today. In fact, most of them wouldnt do well in a spelling contest.

reply

No doubt of that, but I'm talking about the difference between the two portrayals of him.

I don't think Ike was the boss in the movie. Robert Mitchum was supposed to play Old Man Clanton but got sick or injured.

Curley mentioned he ran things. I think with Mitchum out the movie danced around who was in charge.

Ike definitely wasn't the boss in this movie, but he was the boss in the 'Wyatt Earp and the Cowboy War' documentary, which is what my initial question is about.
