So the ending clearly implied there would be a sequel..

But wtf else could they have done? Bowser was destroyed, the Goombas broke good, Yoshi was already introduced...wouldn't this being a one-off had made more sense than that ending?

There is a continuation in the form of a comic book series.

Except that Bowser wasn't destroyed, because he wasn't in the movie. I always imagined that after Koopa was nixed, Bowser swooped in while the king was still recovering.

I was always under the assumption that Bowser was Koopa in this movie, and peach was Daisy, and so forth. Never understood why ..
