Liked this since I saw it as a kid

the big criticism seems to be that it's nothing like the game. I was too young to get into the game so all I can say is big deal to that. Video games are a different medium. It's like a movie being different to the novel it's based on. This movie is a great adventure for the whole family. Not perfect by any means but it has a good cast with funny chemistry, tremendous sets and designs, and good effects for its time. I think it needed a stronger filmmaking team than the rookies that did it. And some fine tuning of the screen play as well. But it certainly isn't a 4. Especially in a world where forgettable cg turds get ratings above 6 and 7

I couldn't agree more. I've always loved the movie and never understood the criticism

I loved this movie as a kid too. It was actually my favorite movie ever as a kid. Just an amazing adventure and really cool sets that are nice to look at.

Yes, it is nothing like the games, but it literally impossible to make a good movie adaption to a very simple game like Super Mario. All you are doing is saving a princess from a lizard thing. There is no depth whatsoever. So even if they made a faithful movie adaption to that, it would still be horrible. So making that into a movie is just setting yourself up for failure.

Most older games, the plots are completely absent, so it is a waste of time to base movies off of them. Movies adaptions only work if you have good material to work with from the start. So only a game like Mass Effect or Halo has potential to be a good movie. But something like Mario or Pac-man literally has no potential to be a good movie. Some video-games are only meant to be video-games.
